School Profile

In 1928, the Borough purchased a plot of land comprising of 2.4 acres to build a new school, which is now the site of Washington Elementary School! By June, 1931, the school was ready for classes from kindergarten to fifth grade. Ultimately, the middle school students were transferred to Washington School from Franklin School, and the first graduation was held in June 1932.  Increased facilities became necessary with the growth of Hawthorne, and in 1940, a classroom was constructed in the basement.  This was followed by the development of a "manual training room", "domestic science room", and a gymnasium. By 1964, more than 275 students from grades kindergarten through eighth grade were enrolled at Washington School.  As the Borough continued to change, so did Washington School.  With the addition of a new gymnasium, and Lincoln Middle School opening its doors, we have the K-5 Washington Elementary School that we know today! Washington School has had 12 principals since it built the new building in 1928 starting with Miss. Elizabeth Terhune to its present principal, Mrs. Jackie Passero. Go Wildcats!
